A TROOP REFLECTIONS ON THE ACAV

The one thing that I was very proud of on my track was its interior layout. No other APC in the platoon was quite like it. Our TC, Bruce Groulx, had somehow secured three large footlockers. We placed one across the cargo bay under the cupola and the other two abutted the one going across on both ends. If you looked through the door, the lockers looked like a squared, inverted "U", with the footlockers lining the edges of the cargo bay. These wooden footlockers were filled with ammunition. We stored 50 .cal in the locker underneath the TC and M-60 ammo in the lockers underneath the rear machineguns. Since we usually had only three crew members, each had their own "bed." When we had another body, then that guy slept on the floor in the slot made by the three footlockers. We only slept inside the track during the monsoons. We could sit very comfortably on the footlockers with our feet resting on the floor. It was as if we had two sofas. Only one person could sit with his feet resting on the floor on the crosswise locker. We played poker in the track, using stacked up c-ration boxes as a table. You can see how people sat in our track in this photo: track 12

I remember everyone in the picture clockwise from left: JB, Maggot, Peter Rabbit, Doc Parker, Papasan, me, Duffy, SS and Jimmy D. Mann. It's too dark between Doc & Papasan to make out who is sitting there (on the crosswise footlocker), but I suspect it was Milard the Mallard Mills.
