Trooper's Reflections on the C-123

C123 C-123

My only recollection of a C-123 was in Da Nang, April, 1970. Turtle and I were returning from Sydney after spending 4 days there on R&R. We were waiting for a plane to take us back to Quang Tri. I was looking out on the flight deck when I saw a C-123 taxing into position to what I thought was takeoff. The plane accellerated down the runway billowing smoke and back-firing. I told Turtle that there was no way I was going to fly on that plane. The plane made numerous runs up and down the runway, running very poorly. If I was offered a choice, I would walk back to Quang Tri. Suddenly, a C-130 landed and we were advised that we would board that plane. Looking back on the incident, I believe that the mechanics were just testing the C-123 and it really wasn't getting ready to takeoff. Saved me a long walk. Taylor
