Otis Artis was in the 1st Platoon 1970-71

Oct. 2, 1947-July 13, 2006 DURHAM -- Otis Lee Artis, 58, of 400 N. Leslie St., died Thursday at the Veterans Administrative Medical Center in Durham. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, with military honors. Mr. Artis was born in Wayne County to the late Odell Artis and Mary Pearson Artis. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served in the Vietnam War and received many decorations including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze stars, the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Sixty Defense and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and two service stripes. He is survived by brothers, Carl Artis of Goldsboro, Robert Artis of Marion, N.C., and Alton Artis of Zebulon; sisters, Edna Taylor of Dudley, Dorothy Cox and her husband, Donnie, of Goldsboro, Mary Artis of Goldsboro and Judy Artis of Dudley; a special nephew, William Artis of Goldsboro; and a host of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Mr. Artis was preceded in death by three brothers, Clifton Artis, Douglas Artis and Kenneth Artis.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 until 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory in Goldsboro. The family will be present from 6 until 7 p.m. at Howell Funeral Home and Crematory and other times at the home of his sister, Mary Artis, 405 South Andrews Avenue in Goldsboro.
